Before You Begin
This guide covers the complete setup of a Zebra ZT230 or ZT231 industrial desktop printer: installing the Windows printer driver over USB, loading a ribbon for thermal transfer printing, and verifying that everything is working correctly. The ZT230 and ZT231 share the same driver and media-loading procedure, so this guide applies to either model.
What you will need
- The ZT230 or ZT231 printer, its power cable, and a USB cable to connect it to your PC.
- A roll of labels and a compatible ribbon, if you're printing with thermal transfer media.
- A Windows PC with an internet connection to download the driver.
Note: Ribbon is only needed for thermal transfer printing. If you're using direct thermal labels (which darken with heat and don't need a ribbon), you can skip Part 2 and load your label roll directly.
Part 1 — Install the Windows Printer Driver
Steps
- Download the Seagull printer driver
- Accept the license agreement
- Confirm the installation directory
- Run the Driver Wizard after unpacking
- Connect the printer over USB
- Confirm the driver installed successfully
- Open the printhead assembly
- Thread the ribbon under the printhead
- Attach the ribbon core to the take-up spindle
- Attach the ribbon leader to the take-up core
- Confirm the ribbon is wound correctly
- Confirm the printer appears in Zebra Setup
- Print a configuration label
- Confirm the label prints
Step 1
Download the Seagull printer driver
- Go to bartendersoftware.com/resources/printer-drivers and fill in the form to download the latest Seagull Windows printer driver.
- Under Brands, choose Zebra. Under Brand Models, select your exact model (for example, Zebra ZT230 at 203 dpi, or the matching ZT231 entry).
- Agree to the privacy policy and click Download latest version. Once it downloads, run the installer.
Step 2
Accept the license agreement
In the Windows Printer Drivers setup window, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
Step 3
Confirm the installation directory
Leave the installation directory at its default location (or choose your own) and click Next. This is just where the driver files are unpacked, not where the printer driver itself will live once installed.
Step 4
Run the Driver Wizard after unpacking
Make sure Run Driver Wizard after unpacking drivers is checked, then click Finish. This automatically launches the Seagull Driver Wizard to install the printer.
Step 5
Connect the printer over USB
In the Seagull Driver Wizard, select USB as how the printer is going to be attached. Connect the printer to your PC with a USB cable and power it on. The wizard will automatically detect the printer and advance to the next step — if it doesn't, double-check the cable connection and that the printer is powered on.
Step 6
Confirm the driver installed successfully
Once installation completes, the wizard confirms the printer is being installed (for example, 'Zebra ZT231' is being installed). Click Close. The printer driver is now installed and ready to use over USB.
Step 7
Open the printhead assembly
Part 2 — Load the Ribbon (Thermal Transfer Printing) If you're printing on thermal transfer labels, load the ribbon before loading your label media. Make sure the printer is powered off (or the printhead is open) before working inside the media compartment.
Open the printer's top cover and lift the printhead assembly, highlighted in the image below, to access the ribbon supply and take-up spindles.
Step 8
Thread the ribbon under the printhead
Route the ribbon from the supply roll under and through the printhead assembly, following the path highlighted in the image, so it feeds evenly across the printhead.
Step 9
Attach the ribbon core to the take-up spindle
Slide an empty cardboard core onto the take-up spindle (marked Core required on take-up spindle) — this is what the used ribbon will wind onto as the printer prints.
Step 10
Attach the ribbon leader to the take-up core
Tape or clip the ribbon's leader strip to the take-up core and rotate the take-up spindle by hand a couple of turns to remove any slack, so the ribbon sits flat and tensioned across the printhead.
Step 11
Confirm the ribbon is wound correctly
Check that the ribbon is winding evenly onto the take-up spindle with no wrinkles or twists. Close the printhead assembly and the printer's top cover once you're satisfied the ribbon path looks correct.
Step 12
Confirm the printer appears in Zebra Setup
Part 3 — Verify the Installation
Utilities
Open Zebra Setup Utilities. Your printer should appear in the printer list (for example, ZDesigner ZT231-300dpi ZPL on USB001), confirming the driver installed correctly.
Step 13
Print a configuration label
Right-click the printer and open its Properties, then go to the Driver Settings tab and select Support.
Under Basic troubleshooting, click Print next to Print configuration label to print a status label listing the printer's current settings — sensor type, firmware version, and more.
Step 14
Confirm the label prints
If the printer feeds out a configuration label like the one shown below, setup is complete and the printer is ready for everyday use.
Final Installation Checklist
Before handing the printer over to the user, verify the following:
- The Seagull printer driver installed successfully and the printer appears in Zebra Setup Utilities.
- The printer is connected over USB and powered on.
- The ribbon (if using thermal transfer media) is threaded correctly and winding evenly onto the take-up spindle.
- A configuration label prints successfully from the printer's Support tab.
Quick Troubleshooting Reference
- Driver Wizard doesn't detect the printer. Confirm the USB cable is fully seated and the printer is powered on. Try a different USB port, and make sure no other driver for the printer is already installed (use Upgrade instead).
- Printed labels look faded or streaky. Check the ribbon is loaded correctly and wound tight with no wrinkles (Steps 8–11), and confirm the ribbon type matches your label media (wax, wax/resin, or resin).
- Nothing prints when sending a test label. Print a configuration label (Step 13) to confirm the printer is communicating with the PC, and check that the correct printer is selected as the default in Windows.
