Before You Begin

This guide walks through connecting a Zebra ZD-series desktop label printer (such as the ZD420, ZD500R, or ZD620) to a wireless (Wi-Fi) network using an Android device and the free Zebra Printer Setup Utility app. The printer is first paired over Bluetooth so the app can push the Wi-Fi configuration to it — the printer does not need to already be on the network to start this process.

What you will need

  • The ZD-series printer, its power cable, and label media loaded and ready to print.
  • An Android phone or tablet with Bluetooth enabled and the Google Play Store available.
  • Your Wi-Fi network name (ESSID) and password/security details on hand.
  • The printer powered on and within Bluetooth range of the Android device.
Steps
  1. Turn on the printer
  2. Run a manual calibration (optional)
  3. Print the network configuration label
  4. Install the Zebra Printer Setup Utility
  5. Open Zebra Utilities
  6. Search for the printer
  7. Connect over Bluetooth
  8. Open Connectivity Settings
  9. Select Wireless
  10. Enter your Wi-Fi network details
  11. Enable wireless and continue
  12. Apply the settings
  13. Confirm the wireless connection

Step 1

Turn on the printer

Press the power button to turn on the printer. On startup the printer automatically performs a self-calibration to sense the loaded label stock. The status lights and the Pause, Feed, and Cancel buttons are all located on the front panel, shown below.

Step 13

Confirm the wireless connection

After applying the settings, the printer restarts its network interface. The network status light (the icon on the right of the front panel) is red while it reconnects. Once the printer successfully joins your Wi-Fi network, that light turns green, confirming the wireless connection is active.

While the printer is applying settings and reconnecting, the network status light is red.

Final Installation Checklist

Before handing the printer over to the user, verify the following:

  • The printer powers on and calibrates label stock correctly.
  • The Zebra Printer Setup Utility app successfully found and paired with the printer over Bluetooth.
  • The correct Wi-Fi network name (ESSID) and security mode were entered.
  • Settings were applied and the network status light turned green.
  • The printed network configuration label shows a valid IP address on your network.

Quick Troubleshooting Reference

  • App can't find the printer. Confirm the printer is powered on, within Bluetooth range, and not already paired to another device. Restart Bluetooth on the phone and try again.
  • Network status light stays red. Double-check the ESSID spelling and Security Mode match your network exactly, and confirm the Wi-Fi password entered was correct. Reapply the settings (Steps 10–12).
  • Settings don't seem to save. Make sure you tap Apply (Step 12) — settings are discarded if you back out of the wizard before applying.
Once connected to the Wi-Fi network, the network status light turns green.
