Choose the Right Desktop Printer

Direct Thermal vs Thermal Transfer

Direct thermal prints by heating special label stock, no ink, toner, or ribbon. Ideal for shipping labels and short-life barcodes.

Thermal transfer uses a ribbon to melt ink onto the label for sharper, longer-lasting prints. Choose this for product labels exposed to heat, light, or chemicals.

3 Questions Before You Buy

  • What label size? Most shippers need 4×6. Compact desks may need 2" or 3" models.
  • Shipping only, or barcodes too? Shipping-focused printers (ZP-450, LP2844) vs inventory workhorses (GK420D).
  • Need network printing? Look for built-in Ethernet, Network PRO bundles, or +Ethernet upgrades.

FAQ

Desktop Printer Questions

Quick answers before you add to cart.

Direct thermal printers use heat-sensitive labels, no ribbon required. They're the standard for shipping. Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon for darker, more durable prints on synthetic or paper labels. Some models, like the TLP-2844, support both methods.
